In a culture where coffee shops are an expected sight on every street corner and café menus require twenty feet of wall space, it can be a daunting experience to journey into the surprisingly vast world of coffee. There are resources to guide you through the espresso menu, but in this day and age, you need more than a book of facts. The American barista plays as much a role as the coffee itself in your café experience. Hip, tattooed, and full of opinions, baristas pride themselves on their coffee snobbery, and for better or worse, they are the gatekeepers of your caffeine. Luckily, The Coffee Snob is your sharp-tongued crash course to the world of espresso and the baristas who prepare it for you. David Foster's fast paced, clever book is a wealth of information about the core café menu told through the lens of his years of experience as a barista. Find out why coffee snobs scoff at the “skinny vanilla latte,” and why macchiatos have become a metaphor for the battle between corporate coffee and small independent shops. Whether you want to know more about your favorite drink or branch out into new caffeinated horizons, The Coffee Snob will empower you to order your next espresso drink with confidence and just a touch of barista-certified snobbery.

What a great holiday gift idea, this sweet introduction to the cafe menu.I would like to write more in this review later when I can take my time to truly explain how helpful this book is to me. For now, let me just say that I am so glad I picked it up when I did as I am better to able to understand exactly what I'm ordering and how to get precicly what I want at the coffee shop. Almost more importantly than that, without even trying to learn something in this easy to read comprehensive guide, I picked up all sorts of useful information that have added to my ability to carry on a conversation about one of my most favorite things in the world, coffee!
The author demonstrates quite a bit of humility, intelligence and humor with anecdotal stories about what it's like to be a barista. It must be very frustrating to handle the order of the customer who doesn't have any idea what they are ordering and would more quickly blame the barista for making them the wrong drink then admit that they don't know what they are talking about.
I feel that as long as I have this sweet little guide as my companion, I can easily navigate the most fancy Cafe menus.

The Coffee Snob A Brief Introduction to the Café Menu David L Foster 9780692319529 Books Reviews
A well done comically executed guide to the American Cafe menu. This book is the perfect gift for that coffee snob friend of yours.
I am brazilian and lived for 3 years in USA. During this time I never understood why it was so difficult to find a "real good coffee" to drink even though I was going to a coffee shop. Reading this book I got the point! I would love to have had the chance to know these things before...
David certainly has swayed my ideas on coffee and has begun to make a coffee snob of me. His experience has given him the credentials to criticize coffee snobbery in America; helping us to coffee greatness!
I really enjoyed this inside look, They say you never truly understand until you have been on the other side of the counter, The Coffee Snob gives you this view, easy to read, understand and absorb. Its a great addition to my library.
This book provides a quick journey into the fascinating and elegant realm of coffee artistry so tragically eclipsed by corporate America. The Coffee Snob leaves you wanting more of the real thing and less of "café com leite".
This book is good at being what it is A critique of Starbucks. It is not very good at being what its title, and the reviews, suggested to me An educational book about coffee and the coffees served in coffee bars. If you already know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino, and want a more in-depth coffee education, don't bother with this book. If you're looking for a diatribe against "the green mermaid," by all means, read it and be amused. You'll probably give it five stars.
This book has a nice explanation of traditional coffee drinks and what their recipes originally looked like compared to the Starbucks version. It could have used another editing round, just for clarity. I also would have appreciated a bit more info on how to discern & appreciate well-made coffee instead of all the thinly-veiled complaints about the "green mermaid" and American non-connoisseurs. The author expresses his hope that his readers can proceed to the coffee house with confidence after reading his book, but his book mostly told me that the coffee house menu is wrong anyway, so whatevs...
